The last two weeks prior to the official start of the summer out East saw the Hamptons budding with local music events, as people emerged from their winter burrows and filled the rooms. On May 10 the Presbyterian Church in East Hampton lent its beautiful acoustics to the ethereal performance of the Accord Treble Choir from NYC. Nine women with perfect pitch joined in otherworldly harmony a cappella to sing choral songs in honor of Mother’s Day and Mother Earth. To be in the presence of this beauty had the audience leave in a strange collective joy for having been together transported by artistic excellence. The following week, for four days, Montauk was taken over by rock and folk bands from the City and all over the island for the Montauk Musicfest. Every nick and corner in stores and restaurants, on patios and in the center green, was given over to bands that just rocked their hearts out. Bouncing from one to the other and under the Spring sun and in cozy dark haunts that stayed cozy and dark through the day, like the historic Shagwong Inn and Memory Hotel, was an immersion that had one raising one’s arm in the classic rock in salute at one another, again, a collective community experience of artistic excellence and fun.
